Procedures and guidelines for candidates and reviewers

This page outlines the main elements of the tenure and promotion process. The information provided is meant to support and provide guidance to Candidates, Deans, and members of the Division Review (DRC) and University Review Committees (URC).

Start planning early

Submission of a Tenure and Promotion Dossier for review by the DRC and URC is a requirement for all applications by tenure-track Assistant Professors for tenure and promotion to Associate Professor, and tenured Associate Professors for promotion to Professor.

It is important that you start planning early and provide yourself enough time to compile, review, edit and submit your dossier. Candidates are encouraged to attend the workshop on how to construct their tenure and promotion dossier, which is offered in collaboration with the Offices of Teaching & Learning; and Research, Engagement, & Graduate Studies.

Review criteria and procedures for tenure and promotion

It is the candidate’s responsibility to review the Terms and Procedures for Tenure and Promotion (TPP) and Faculty Standards for their respective areas, and ensure that all required documents needed to evaluate their application are included in the Tenure and Promotion File (TPF).

DRC and URC members should also familiarize themselves with the timelines and milestones involved in the process and ensure they attend the required training prior to evaluating and taking part in the decision-making process regarding a candidate’s application.
