email C’tičtəna’atWhen you meet C’tičtəna’at (Mavis Pierre) you may think she is awfully young to be an Indigenous Knowledge Keeper, however she is indeed both. Mavis was born to the late Dean Sam, and Coleen Pierre. Both of her parent are revered in the Coast Salish community for their lifetime of living, breathing, and teaching their culture. Mavis was and is an astute learner travelling with her parents and soaking up the si’wes they both share ever so generously. Mavis was pushed into the position of sharing what she had learned and taking on this role of teacher when her dad transitioned and his teachings would only then be shared through the collective memories of those he had taught.
Mavis’ dedicated listening and watching has served her well as she is able to easily recall the teachings, allows herself to be guided by Elders and cultural leaders, and shares generously what she knows. This has meant that Mavis is often called up to share her many cultural gifts.
As a Knowledge Keeper at the ISC Mavis brings forward the coast Salish culture to center this in the university. When she sings she makes our hearts soar; when she shares her knowledge, we cannot help but want to learn. As she moves throughout the university it is easy to recognize reconciliation at work as she makes the hallways, green spaces and classrooms a better place to be.
Mavis is a proud Xwelmexw woman; mother to her one year old in partnership with her husband Moon.
