Ey swáyèl, Sts’ó:wuselwet tel skwix. Teli tsel kw’a Leq’á:mel.
Good day, my name is Camielle Laslo and I am from Leq’á:mel.
I was born and raised in Deroche. My early years of education started in Chehalis Community School and this is where I started to learn our Language Halq’eméylem. I had finished my high school career at Hatzic Secondary School. From here, I went to the University of Fraser Valley (UFV) and worked as a First Nations teacher assistant from 2003 until 2011. Meanwhile, in 2008, I started my Bachelor of Education(B.ed) at the University of British Columbia (UBC) for my elementary teaching degree. At the same time, I completed my Halq’emeylem Proficiency Certificate from UFV in 2011. From here, I graduated in 2013 with my B.ed from NITEP at UBC and applied to work at Lalme’ iwestawxtexw (Seabird Island Community School) as a teacher on call. I worked as a Halq’eméylem teacher at Lalme’ iwestawxtexw from 2014 until 2019. It was 2018 when I finished my Master's in Education Administration and Leadership with an Indigenous focus at UBC Now in 2023, I am teaching Halq'emeylem 101 at UFV and raising a daughter and living in Abbotsford.
"In my first year I realized that my passion was with French and it was something that was super enjoyable. I wasn't fluent to begin so it was a lot of work and effort but at the same time it was very rewarding. It opened my eyes to a new culture and a new way of life.
