email JuliaMy name is Julia Shuker. I have a long history with the University of the Fraser Valley (UFV) – the House of Transformation.
In 1986, completed the Criminal Justice diploma. Because of my credentials from UFV, I was hired permanent full time by the BC Government and worked for 24 years at Burnaby Youth Secure Custody Centre. This is a maximum-security facility for high-risk youth who had committed and served time for serious criminal offences.
In 2007, I left BC youth services and transferred to the Correctional Service of Canada at the Fraser Valley Institution for Women. About 2010, I decided it was time for a massive change, too much time in maximum security facilities. I returned to UFV, completed my BA in Criminal Justice and a minor in Political Science. While I was here, completing my undergraduate studies, transforming myself for the second time, I worked on a variety of research projects in the Criminology department.
My third and final transformation occurred in 2017 when I completed a master’s degree in criminal justice with a desire to teach at UFV. I began teaching in the Criminal Justice department, then branched out to Arts Integrated Studies (AIS) to work with International and new and returning to university students. I currently teach UNIV 101 and CSM 104. I am always the happiest when I am working with students, helping them transform, learning new things and exploring new opportunities and challenges.
I am incredibly happy to be in the Academic Advising department, learning new things and able to assist students with their transformation journey, no matter what stage. I will be assisting General Studies Diploma (GSD) and Bachelor of Integrated Studies (BIS) students with their advising needs.
