Explore your options and build on your strengths

UFV’s Explore Trades Sampler program is ideal for students, young adults, or women wishing to learn practical skills, gain general employment certifications, and explore trades careers.

This program is a unique opportunity to explore a variety of trades—including Automotive, Drafting, Electrical, Heavy Mechanical, Carpentry, Welding, and Plumbing and Piping—and to acquire basic skills that will prove fundamental if you decide to become a tradesperson. At the end of the program, you are certified in Forklift Truck, First Aid, and Workplace Hazardous Material Information System (WHMIS), and you are ready to enter trade foundation training or seek an apprenticeship in the trade of your choice.

Days and times: Jan 03 - Mar 22 | 20025, M-F, 9:00 am-3:00 pm No Class Family Day February 19th Apr 08 - June 28 | 20155, M-F, 9:00 am-2:30 pm No Class Victoria Day May 20th

Location: Abbotsford — Aerospace Centre

Tuition*: $1589, including tuition costs, and books

Additional costs: Cotton Coveralls and CSA-Approved Steel toed boots are required.

Employment facts

The Explore Trades Sampler program is a career exploration program that gives you the opportunity to explore select trades and earn certifications in Forklift Truck, First Aid, and Workplace Hazardous Material Information System (WHMIS), which can be useful to secure general employment with retailers, warehouses, manufacturers, or processing plants.

At the end of the program, you are ready to enter trade foundation training or seek an apprenticeship in the trade of your choice.

Currently in Canada, the demand for skilled tradespeople, including electricians, welders, mechanics, carpenters, and pipefitters, has never been higher. Training in a trade can open the path to an exciting and well-paid career, if you find that this type of work suits your skills and disposition.

Entrance requirements

There is no application or entrance exam required.

Minimum age is 15.

Program outline

UFV’s Explore Trades Sampler  is designed for you to try multiple trades to help you decide which one you’d like to pursue as a career.

As a program participant, you get to learn on top-of-the-line equipment and tools in UFV’s spacious Trades and Technology Centre, under the supervision of an experienced instructor.

Trades explored

You explore a variety of trades and acquire basic skills that will prove fundamental if you decide to become a trades person.

  • Plumbing & piping

Certification earned*

When you complete the program, you earn the following certifications, which can be useful to secure general employment with retailers, warehouses, manufacturers, or processing plants:

  • Forklift Truck (forklift training)
  • First Aid
  • Workplace Hazardous Material Information System (WHMIS)

Career preparation

You also have the opportunity to complete worksite visits as well as a career preparation module.

At the end of the program, you are ready to enter trade foundation training or seek an apprenticeship.
