UFV's Graphic + Digital Design (GDD) directed studies courses provide the opportunity for studios, creative professionals, and in-house marketing departments to mentor a graphic design student. Students bring entry-level skills in communication design, brand identity, interactive design, and dynamic media as well as a keen interest in learning about professional practice.
Interested?
The first step is to consider the scope of work for the position. There may be a particular project or an existing position, or a student may have a career goal. The next step is to meet with the student. Your selected student will then submit a proposal to UFV about the practicum and once approved the practicum can begin.
Practicum Host Requirements
After the practicum begins, UFV GDD requires practicum hosts to assess the student using a rubric based on professional standards. This takes place two times — half-way through, and at the end of the practicum. The assessment helps meet goals and expectations and identifies areas for further development.
Student Requirements
70 to 120 hours in-studio for a three-credit course — usually one day per week for 10 weeks. Based on student course work and/or host availability.
Weekly summaries outlining the experience — tasks, meetings, and brief reflections.
Blog Post — A 100 word blog post with an image e.g. the student in the studio, or a featured project — something that is relevant to the practicum.
Case Study — Tells a story about the overall experience, challenges, highlights, summary of their learning, and take-aways.
